It’s still just a bill. And there will be many chances to sink it in the coming weeks, from Democrats’ insistence on moving a much larger package to Republican opposition to any compromise ahead of 2022 Congressional elections.
Nonetheless, bipartisan legislation for massive new infrastructure spending appears to have passed a critical juncture in the US Senate. And that means the odds of a massive federal cash infusion to upgrade America’s roads, bridges, ports, communications, power and water systems starting in 2022 are the best in decades.
There’s no denying US government spending has been behind many of this country’s greatest breakthroughs–from the interstate highway system and the microchip developed as a result of national defense efforts to multiple coronavirus vaccines under “Operation Warp Speed.” And equally, there are plenty of examples where massive federal outlays went for naught, other than adding to the national debt mountain.
